Heat Supply with Geothermal Energy for the Extension of Geschwister-Scholl-Gymnasium (GSG) in Garbsen

One recent highlight is the extension of the Geschwister-Scholl-Gymnasium (GSG) in Garbsen, located on the former sports field of TSV Berenbostel, north of the existing school building. This approximately 85-meter-hybrid timber skeleton structure with steel composite columns on the façades and timber columns inside.

Renewable Heat Supply Through Geothermal Energy

The city of Garbsen, the project owner, secured funding through KfW’s “Klimafreundlicher Neubau Nichtwohngebäude – Kommunen” program. The goal: a fully renewable heat supply concept achieving DGNB and QNG certification as a climate-friendly new building.

M&P Energy designed a geothermal system using 36 ground probes, each 149 meters deep, providing monovalent heating through a floor heating system that ensures comfort in winter and tempering in summer. From feasibility studies to 3D modeling of thermal impacts, water rights procedure, and construction-ready planning, M&P Energy guided every stage, ensuring quality and efficiency.

To ensure optimal performance and long-term reliability, M&P Energy implemented continuous operational monitoring of the geothermal system. Two dedicated temperature monitoring points will be installed upstream and downstream of the groundwater flow to monitor the temperature profile in the subsoil and thus ensure efficiency.

In addition, recycled backfill sand from a regional rainwater retention basin will be used for the geothermal pipe trenches, underlining the commitment to achieving DGNB and QNG certification as a climate-friendly new building.

The planned implementation of the geothermal system at GSG Garbsen will result in a fully functional, renewable heat supply that significantly reduces the school’s carbon footprint and energy costs. The project also supports the city’s overarching sustainability goals. Furthermore, the extension now serves as a model for climate-friendly public buildings and demonstrates how innovative engineering solutions, sustainable materials and strategic planning can be combined to achieve lasting ecological and sustainable benefits.
