Description of the project:
The old landfill “Balger Straße” was created as a former clay pit of a brickworks and then used by the city of Baden-Baden as a landfill for household waste. Waste: Household waste, commercial waste, construction waste, road demolition, excavated earth, sewage sludge
Characteristic pollutants in groundwater runoff: CHCs, PAHs, benzene, cyanide, ammonium, as well as gas emissions in the immediate vicinity (road substructure, shafts, sewers). After a detailed investigation, it was decided to remediate the old deposit by means of a sealing wall.
Start / completion:
2003/2012 (main measure, cut-off wall construction 2008, monitoring phase ongoing until 2012)
Services performed by ICP:
ICP was initially commissioned to carry out the I/E analysis (remediation study E3-4) in accordance with the Baden-Württemberg Contaminated Sites Handbook. For this purpose, after the planning of the further exploratory measures by ICP, tender documents were prepared for the construction of additional groundwater observation wells as well as other measures (pumping and filling tests, taking of soil samples (for soil mechanical/physical investigations) and groundwater samples (for chemical analyses). The drilling was monitored and the assay results were evaluated together with the findings available to date.
After the possibility of a sealing wall around the old deposit was shortlisted as a recommended measure, ICP carried out groundwater modelling and then simulated the effects of a sealing wall. After an enclosure of the old deposit by means of a sealing wall as a safety measure was determined, the hydraulic measures required for this are described by ICP. After approval of the cut-off wall enclosure with dewatering and leachate treatment (pump and treat), ICP was commissioned with the planning and on-site construction supervision of the measure.
